Preparing for blood tests

How to prepare for your sample

Good preparation avoids misleading results and repeat tests. If you are unsure about anything, ask us by phone or at reception.

What to do

For most blood tests:

  • Come in the morning, after 8-12 hours without food
  • Drink as much still water as you like
  • Take your usual medicines unless your doctor has told you otherwise
  • Bring your referral and national health card for CAS-covered tests
  • For a urine culture, use a sterile container from us or from a pharmacy

What to avoid

In the 24 hours before your sample:

  • Alcohol and very fatty meals
  • Intense physical exercise
  • Coffee, tea and smoking on the morning of the test
  • Biotin supplements before hormone tests, if your doctor agrees you can pause them
Frequently asked questions

About lab tests and imaging

Do I need an appointment for blood tests?

No. Samples are taken in order of arrival, Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 11:00 and on Saturdays from 08:00 to 10:30. Ultrasound, Holter monitoring and spirometry need an appointment.

How do I get my results?

You receive an access code when your sample is taken. Results appear in your online account once validated, and you can download them as a PDF signed electronically by the laboratory doctor.

Which tests does CAS cover?

Tests in the basic package, written on a referral from your family doctor or a specialist contracted with CAS. Coverage depends on the monthly funds available, and reception checks on the spot that your referral is still valid.

How long do results take?

Blood count, routine biochemistry and thyroid hormones are usually ready the same day by 15:00. Tests sent to partner laboratories take 3 to 10 working days, and the exact date is printed on your sample receipt.

Can I have tests without a doctor's recommendation?

Yes, on request and at list prices. We still recommend discussing the results with a doctor, especially if any values fall outside the reference range.
